Vacation Destination

Last night, over mom’s birthday dinner, we decided if we could, it would be great to get away for Christmas.  We haven’t travelled to a destination as an entire family in a very long time.  The last time we travelled just as a family, when everyone could make it, was probably Africa in 2004 (that was before my brother Joe and I were dating our spouses).  It gets difficult to travel with work schedules, grandkids, and pregnancies.  We discovered last night that this is one of those rare opportunities where everyone can get away and the kids are at great ages to travel.

We’re thinking warm.  We’re thinking not a long flight.  We’re thinking not crazy expensive.  We’re thinking chances are slim to get this whole thing pulled off by Christmas, but I’ll give it my best shot.  Any suggestions?  Hidden gems in Mexico? A fabulous home rental in Palm Springs?  I would love the help.  There are 14 of us in total (including 5 kids) so a home rental is probably the best bet.

I saw this awesome spot in Sunset Magazine…Rancho Pescadero

Kate, I have a suggestion but it is NOT warm weather and is is just a bit pricey, but it is a destination Dirk and I discovered a few years ago. . . it is called Blackberry Farm in the Great Smoky Mountains, Knoxville, Tennessee. It is a Relais & Chateau property and is over 3 thousand acres of heavenly bliss; a Foodie destination, equestrian mecca, interior design mecca, one of the most wonderful places we have been to ANYWHERE. Call if you want more info. and definitely search for it on the net; it is our dream to take our girls there to experience the magic. Very family friendly, many families have been sojourning to Blackberry for generations. . .

Oh Blackberry Farm is supposed to be AMAZING but definitely is on the pricey side. Pat and I wanted to go for our anniversary for just a night but found out there’s a 3 night minimum over the weekends. Some day….
I have a suggestion for this boutique hotel in Cabo I went to years ago with family friends. It’s called Cabo Surf:

They have bigger villas that sleep 6 or 8 and the pool and restaurant are amazing. It’s small though (22 rooms total) so with your fam it wouldn’t feel like there are too many other guests. This was years ago but I remember loving it. And the beach is great for walking, plus it’s in between Cabo san lucas (for nightlife) and San jose (for shopping). I wish it was an easy flight from Nashville!

Blackberry Farm is very popular out here. My guess is that it is already booked but maybe not. There is a cool spot outside of Austin, TX which should be warm. I think that it is called Barton Springs.
In our backyard is the beautiful Homestead Resort (Hot Springs, Virginia)with skiing, ice skating, horse back riding and out of this world Christmas decorations. Your family could take over the tower and have a grand old time. It’s a non-stop flight from SF to DC then a 3-4 hour drive to the mountains.

Hi Kate – There is a place in Akumal, Mexico that is beautiful. A Swedish woman books people into these gorgeous on the beach large, medium or small villas. Google Akumal, Mexico to see the beaches. If you want her phone number it is 52-984-147-0966. Give it a try and let me know if something comes up for you. xxoo

For warm, relaxing and family friendly, but on the pricey side check out Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel on the Big Island.

It is on a great beach with a small bay, with some good snorkeling. You can snorkel along the coast for over a half mile up to the next bay. We’ve seen the most turtles we’ve ever seen in Hawaii along this stretch. It is a very relaxing place with a very different feel from most of the other resort hotels on the island. The pool, grounds and beach area are really kid friendly, we actually are hoping to head back there with the baby(and a grandma or two) this winter sometime. If you want to hear more or see some photos give me a call.
