Breakfast Nook Reveal

Do you remember the post when we purchased these fantastic french bistro chairs from the Alameda Flea Market?

We really wanted the table to go with it but weren’t in the mood for shelling out the $700 clams the vendor was asking for.  So I went for a much more cost effective version and finally have things coming along.

The table I decided on is the Tristan Metal Pedestal Table from Cost Plus World Market; it’s small but so is the space and it’s functional.  The zig zag rug is from Urban Outfitters and I love the cheeriness it brings to my morning bowl of cereal.  The orange pillow is from a local shop, but you can find a similar one here.  I would really love to wallpaper that back wall in the Osborne and Little Best in Show Wallpaper.  You can see a sample of it in the background here…

Since we do live in a rental it probably won’t happen.  But I may just ask my landlord.  It never hurts to ask. 🙂  Otherwise, I may frame the fabric sample of the wallpaper for that wall or add on chalkboard.

On the opposite wall, there are these three wonderful built in shelves.  My mother in law was genius in suggesting this is the perfect place for our cookbooks.

I also store my favorite old magazines along with my beloved Jonathan Adler paper weight on top (thank you, Brittany) and I’ve got my dad’s cowhead looking over all.  The wood bowl is a very special gift from my parents for Christmas when Graham and I were first engaged.  The striped fabric you see resting in the background are two antique lawn chairs that I need to restore for our deck.

There you have it – our little nook.  What do you think?

Oh and as an update – Graham loves the Victorian Visitors.  Actually, in all honesty, he was a little apprehensive at first, but now, he thinks they are very cool.  Phew!

That is a very cozy breakfast room and I LOVE that wallpaper. Maybe you could get another sample and do the back of the bookcase. Wooden bowl very cool as well.

I’m no expert but I think that a slightly bigger table might work better with the chairs. It seems like the scale is off. But then again it may be just the angle the picture was taken. Love the chairs though. I agree with Beatrice, maybe you could cover the back of the bookcase with paint or wallpaper to give a pop of color. Adding color on the bookcase would accentuate your paperweight too. One last thing, you can also put decorative wood trim at the front of the shelves. They are inexpensive(at Lowe’s or home depot) but it will make your shelves look more polished. Just my two cents worth. 🙂

I agree with you that a slightly bigger table would work better with the chairs. However, we are on a very tight budget and this table was $89. I have spent quite a few months scouring craigslist and I couldn’t find anything the right size and price. This is more of the solution until we can afford a large table in a year or two. There is a french bistro table in orange that I’m saving up for. It is also a small space. It’s hard to tell in the photo but it’s more like a tiny corridor that we’ve made into a breakfast nook. Love the look of wood trim but don’t think I can do it in a rental. Love the idea of putting wallpaper behind the bookshelf which I can do in a temporary way with two sided tape.

kate, you MUST paper the wall w/ the Best in Show design, it is a fav of mine and would so elevate the corner!! the built in bookshelves are wonderful and those chairs are great. . . and the cost plus table works; always time for a bigger one later! the rug is genius and the orange fabric “pop” really sings. . . i love following the progress of your flat, what an adventure.

So much to comment on. First, your little chairs might inspire me to paint the woven wrapping on my vintage bamboo chairs black. I love the way it looks!! Those chairs are totally swoon worthy. Second, I LOVE your dad’s cow head. I mean LOVE. Third, if you don’t ask, they can’t say no. That’s a comment someone left on my blog and about painting the kitchen cabinets in our rental. It gave me the guts to ask, and not only did they say yes, they also paid for the materials! Go ahead and ask because that wallpaper would totally rock the space.
